The civil war era is one of the most serious and interesting war in our nations history. These two different events that changed many lives of the people in the United States are slavery and African American art. The Civil War changed the lives of the family and friends of the soldiers. When slavery began, it was not the cause of racism but was the method for land owners to obtain free labor. It wasnt until the late 1800s to early 1900s that racism entered the picture. Near the end of the civil war in November 1862, 12,000 union troops landed on Hilton Head Island. The Union forces continued toward Beaufort, to take control of the nearby Islands where more than 10,000 slaves were kept. As the plantation owners fled the area, the slaves were privately free. On January 1, 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared to free all slaves living in the country. This Emancipation Proclamation only freed a few people but it did show the Americans the civil war was now being fought to end slavery. Another event that was changed after the civil war was African-American art. Being a visual artist required talent, but, for the African-American artists, it was not enough. The race were determined if they could be trained. These African-American artists were excluded from the academies, associations, and teaching institution available to white artists. After the civil war, a host of African-American visual arts started to be recognized. They still had a hard time, but it kept improving in time.
